Job description

We have a vacancy for an assistant professor working in the field of ICT, data in civil engineering who is specialised in experimental fluid & sediment dynamics. In particular, the successful candidate has a good overview of measuring equipment for laboratory experiments as well as available methods to process the data that comes available in large experimental programmes. We welcome both fluvial and marine processes specialists, and we expect this assistant professor to develop a network in both fields. This is of importance because rather than owning our own experimental facilities, our strategy is to collaborate with external parties to perform experiments in facilities most suited for the specific purpose of our studies, e.g. through the EU-program Hydralab. The successful candidate will collaborate in (mostly field) data-acquisition and processing and modelling specialists in the marine and fluvial domain as well as in transport, and possibly construction applications, covering the civil engineering domain.  Here in particular, we would like to make the link to innovative data acquisition possibilities. Next, the assistant professor is capable, and willing to, keep close contacts with consultants, knowledge institutes and water authorities (both national and international) on recent developments to be able to link knowledge development and practice. For a balanced composition of our team, we have a preference for a person having a civil engineering background.

Teaching: The new assistant professor will take his/her part in the teaching tasks of our group. This could include for instance BSc-courses on Fluid Dynamics, Data handling and parts of the MSc-courses in Marine Dynamics , River Dynamics or Data and ICT in civil engineering. Also, this assistant professor will supervise BSc- and MSc-final projects. The total teaching load will be about 50%. If the candidate is not yet formally qualified for teaching at universities, we offer a program to obtain this qualification within 2 years (University Teaching Qualification, UTQ).

Research: We look for an independent researcher who is able to identify the academic questions in practical applications related to ICT, data, fluid & sediment dynamics and, vice versa, to translate academic research results into engineering practice. He/she is expected to publish research results in high quality international refereed journals. In addition, he/she is expected to attract external funding (science foundation, EN, government and industry) for junior researchers (PDEng, PhD and PD positions), of whom he/she will become the daily supervisor.

Start: asap after October 1st 2017
