Job description

Project description - The Blood Coagulation Research Program of the Center for Experimental and Molecular Medicine at the Academic Medical Center focuses on fundamental and translational research on how individual coagulation factors affect wound healing, fibrosis, cancer cell metastasis and inflammation. The primary aim of the program is to fully appreciate blood coagulation factor protease-activated receptor (PAR) signaling in pathophysiology.

Within the Blood Coagulation Research Program, we currently have two PhD positions available. The first position focuses on the role of blood coagulation in pancreatic cancer and aims at elucidating the potential clinical relevance of targeting the coagulation cascade as adjuvant therapy for pancreas cancer. The second position focuses on the importance of coagulation factor Xa in fibrosis and aims to establish the molecular mechanisms by which this specific coagulation factor contributes to both the progression of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and liver fibrosis. Both projects utilize a multidisciplinary approach encompassing all aspects of modern molecular biology, including in vitro signal transduction studies, in vivo studies using transgenic mice, cell biology and gene expression analysis.

Requirements

For these projects, we search enthusiastic MSc in medicine, cell biology or molecular biology. Experience with cell biological techniques and animal models in combination with good communication and writing skills in English is appreciated.

Conditions of employment

The opportunity to work with a young team of researchers in a stimulating environment. For each project, we offer a 2 year contract with a two-year extension after a positive evaluation leading to a thesis. The contract is based on 36 hours per week and compensation is according standard salary levels for PhD students starting at € 2086,- and growing to € 2673,- per month in the fourth year on a fulltime basis.
