The research of the Department of Human Genetics is focussed on the childhood cancers neuroblastoma and medulloblastoma. Neuroblastoma is the second most prevalent childhood cancer (7-8% of all childhood tumors) and survival of patients with high stage disease has remained poor over the past 20 years despite aggressive treatment. To obtain more specific and effective therapies, we aim to target molecular pathways that contribute to high stage disease. The BMP/TGF-b pathway has hardly been studied in neuroblastoma. Our preliminary data show a strong correlation between a poor clinical outcome and expression of receptors of the BMP/TGF-b pathway. To further analyze the role of BMP/TGF-b in neuroblastoma, we are looking for an enthusiastic and talented PhD student. In collaboration with international academic groups and financed by KIKA, this research line is aimed to elucidate the role of developmental processes in neuroblastoma and to translate the findings to the clinic. As a PhD student you will analyze the role of BMP/TGF-b signalling pathway in neuroblastoma. Using high throughput data generated in our lab, we have developed a bioinformatics platform that integrates clinical and experimental data, which enables candidate approaches. The work will involve functional assays using lentiviral mediated knockdown of these candidate genes using shRNAs, analysis of clinical specimens and in vivo xenotransplantation studies.
We are seeking a candidate that: (1) has graduated (or will soon graduate) from a MSc program in medical biology, molecular biology, biomedical engineering, or molecular life sciences, (2) has a strong interest in molecular pathways and their analysis with cell-based assays (3) preferably has previous animal handling experience and/or an animal handling licence [article 9 or 12], (4) has a strong scientific curiosity and is highly motivated to pursue a scientific research career.
We offer a fulltime appointment for the duration of4 years, with salary starting at 2086 for the first year and 2673 gross per month in the last year.
Contract type: Temporary, 4 years
