Profile

The intellectual relations between Islam and humanism are an important area in the university's education and research. The university stresses the importance of dialogue between worldviews and religions, particularly Islam, given the social structure and the current political situation in the Netherlands. The UD Islam and Humanism will be expected to contribute significantly to this dialogue. He or she will be teaching and supervising students in the bachelor and master programmes. In addition, the UD Islam and Humanism will be expected to fulfil a number of administrative and managerial tasks.

 

Requirements

Applicants should be in possession of:

• A PhD degree in a relevant Islamic academic field, preferably Islamic philosophy, being a key source of 'Islamic humanism'
• A thorough knowledge, form within Islamic tradition, of Islamic sources and texts, preferably from the original languages
• Academic teaching and research experience, demonstrated by publication records
• A dialogue-oriented approach to worldviews and religions, based on a hermeneutical understanding of spiritual traditions and on sensitivity towards the historical context and human changeability of worldviews over time
• Affinity with the interdisciplinary context and the humanist character of the University of Humanistics
• Either a command of Dutch or the willingness to achieve an academic working level of Dutch within two years

 

Conditions of employment

Contract term:  Temporary for the duration of 2 years. With proven ability the contract term will be converted to permanent.

Contract type: parttime, for three days a week (0,6 fte)
