At the Erasmus Research Centre for Media, Communication and Culture (ERMeCC), you will have an opportunity to collaborate with renowned academics with an international approach. As a lecturer for the International Bachelor’s in Communication and Media (IBCoM) and other educational programmes offered by the Faculty, you will also be teaching in a dynamic, international environment where cutting-edge didactic methods are developed.
The lecturer/PhD candidate position is temporary and will consist of both teaching tasks (40%) and research and research training (60%) towards doctoral research, and a dissertation, which must be completed within five years. The lecturer/PhD candidate will be tasked with teaching, conducting doctoral research, publishing articles in academic journals, writing a dissertation and completing the doctoral degree. The teaching duties will be consistent with the job profile of a (junior-) lecturer (Wetenschappelijk Docent), while the doctoral research will be performed in line with the job profile of a PhD candidate (Promovendus). Given that different salary scales and result categories apply to these job profiles, two separate contracts will be offered for this position for legal reasons.

The Department of Media and Communication is looking for highly motivated PhD candidates who are interested in combining working on a PhD research project with the job of lecturer. Lecturer/PhD candidates who take an interest in one or more of the following fields are preferred:
A background in social sciences is a must, as well as a wide-ranging knowledge of and affinity with the field of media and communication and/or the sociology of media and culture. In addition to an understanding of the latest developments in the field, the candidate must possess didactic skills and an affinity for working with students.
Employment starts in September 2010 or February 2011. The initial contract will be running for a term of 1,5 years, which - depending on performance – will be extended with a second term of 3,5 years.
The conditions of employment correspond with the CAO Nederlandse Universiteiten (CAO NU). The salary for the job of Lecturer (Wetenschappelijk Docent) amounts to a maximum of
€ 4.374,- (grade 11) gross per month on a 38 hour per week contract; for the job of
PhD-Candidate (Promovendus) the salary amounts to a maximum of € 2.612,- (grade P) gross per month on a 38 hour per week contract.
In accordance with the CAO NU, for the job of lecturer a placement in a starting grade is possible for the maximum duration of two years.
The EUR has attractive employment conditions, which include a holiday allowance of 8.0%, an end-of-year bonus of 8.3% and 41 annual vacation days in case of a full workweek.

In addition to a Dutch-language Master’s programme in Media and Journalism, the Department offers three international degree programmes: the International Bachelor’s programme in Communication and Media (IBCoM), the international Master’s programme in Media, Culture and Society, and the Research master’s in the Sociology of Culture, Media and the Arts. The Department is closely linked to the Erasmus Research Centre for Media, Communication and Culture (ERMeCC), which serves as the main base for researchers in Media, Communication and Culture at Erasmus.

350 words each. The selection committee will invite a small number of candidates to submit a more detailed research proposal. This proposal will be assessed based on the coherence of substance and methodology and the proposal’s relevance to the field of media and communication, as well as the feasibility of completing the research by the proposed deadline.
Candidates may be asked to give a test lecture as part of the application procedure.
