Founded in 1952 by Dutch universities and the Netherlands Ministry of Education, the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) is one of the oldest and largest institutes of development studies in Europe. ISS is an international graduate school focusing on policy-oriented critical social science. It pays particular attention to experiences and perspectives in the Global South, but also explores questions of poverty, development, political and economic transition, equity and human rights throughout the world. ISS brings together students and staff from the South and the North in a European environment. As of 2009 the ISS has become a University Institute within Erasmus University Rotterdam, based in The Hague.
The Office of Educational Affairs is responsible for developing and monitoring of educational policy and student affairs.
Job description
Main tasks of and responsibilities
- Provide support to the Doctoral Programme and its students from the moment of registration up to and including the full draft seminar;
- Acting as the first contact for the Doctoral students;
- Informing Doctoral Students about the organization and procedures of the Doctoral Programme (including Ceres);
- Organizing Moodle, E-readers and teaching material for the Doctoral programme(s);
- Acting as a programme administrator for specific doctorate courses;
- Providing secretarial and administrative support to the programme staff concerned;
- Providing support to the RDC:
- On request of the Secretary of the RDC (the AR) call meetings, distribute agenda and documents and minute taking;
- Administer details of registration and progress;
- Monitor the training and supervisory plan and alert RDC via Secretary if needed;
- Archiving;
- Organize dissertation design seminar, post-fieldwork seminar and full draft seminar on request of RDC;
- Support Doctorate students in publishing articles;
- Motivate and support Doctorate students in finding funds for research;
- Archiving on the doctoral students, including copies of communications from RDC to doctoral students;
- Declarations external discussants;
- Assisting in promotion activities.
Requirements
Requirements
- At least at VWO level and two years working experience in a similar position;
- Some years secretarial and administrative experience;
- Good command of the English language (spoken and written), while command of the Dutch language is an asset;
- Capability to organize;
- Good social and communicative skills;
- Experience with supporting Doctorate students is an asset; (for PA Doctorate Programme)
- Ability to work independently.

ISS offers you a pleasant, collegial working environment with varied tasks and career development possibilities. A temporary appointment for an initial period of two years will be offered with the prospect of a permanent appointment.
In accordance with those applied at the Erasmus University Rotterdam and indicated in the Collective Labour agreement (CAO NU) of the Dutch universities. Salary being dependent on the candidate’s experience ranges from € 1986 to € 2682 gross per month (CAO NU scale 7) under full-time contract.
