About the Foundation for Fundamental Research on Matter

The Foundation for Fundamental Research on Matter (FOM) facilitates fundamental physics research in the Netherlands. FOM's activities benefit society in general, and higher education and the private sector in particular.

FOM in a nutshell

FOM employs about 1,050 people of which some 90 are permanent scientific staff, 160 postdocs, 430 PhDs and more than 360 technicians and other employees. The research is carried out at three institutes and by about 180 university workgroups spread over 11 Dutch universities. The employees produce about 60 PhD theses and 1,100 scientific articles per year.

The FOM Foundation spends about 91.8 million euro per year on FOM activities. This funding is mainly derived from the NWO Divisional Board for Physics and the Governing Board of NWO and further the European Union, the Dutch government, and various partnerships with universities and the private sector. The FOM Foundation was founded in 1946.
