Information about the FOM Institutes

FOM research takes place at two types of locations, at institutes and in research groups and universities.

There are three FOM Institutes: FOM Institute AMOLF in Amsterdam, FOM Institute DIFFER (former FOM-Institute for Plasma Physics Rijnhuizen) in Nieuwegein and FOM Institute for Subatomic Physics Nikhef in Amsterdam. This last institute has been incorporated in the partnership of the National Institute for Subatomic Physics (Nikhef).

Unlike other FOM activities, the FOM institutes have their own infrastructure. Institutes therefore have their own technical staff and workplaces.

Energy research and expansion of DIFFER

Over the next few years, FOM intends to make considerable investments in stimulating fundamental energy research and it has decided to expand its Institute DIFFER (Dutch Institute for Fundamental Energy Research) , the Dutch base for research into nuclear fusion, into an institute for fundamental energy research with a national coordinating role.

The institute shall be set up along the same lines as the Nikhef partnership of FOM with the universities, with the universities housing focus groups. The main location will be housed on the campus of Eindhoven University of Technology. You can find further information about the relocation of DIFFER and the expansion of the Institute on www.fom.nl/energy.
