Job description

  • The director bears final responsibility for the overall, day-to-day management of the institute and as such is responsible for shaping the institute’s course and work programme. The director bears final responsibility for the NIDI’s overall performance and as such heads the management team, whose members include the deputy director and department heads.
  • The director represents the NIDI both within and outside the KNAW and promotes the institute’s interests in the Netherlands and abroad.
  • The director positions the institute among scientists and policymakers at national and international level. He or she initiates and participates in national and international collaborations and networks in the institute’s broad field of operation.
  • The director plays an important role in the acquisition of external assignments that link up with the institute’s mission and goals and help cover its operating expenses.
  • The director also generates and participates in research.

Requirements

  • The director has demonstrable experience in managing a professional organisation. The director has a well-defined management approach in which staff members bear their own responsibility. He or she demonstrates that approach by consulting and delegating a broad range of duties to others. The director is the binding factor between the institute’s various departments and units.
  • The director is a professor, an authoritative researcher and an inspiring, stimulating and broadly-oriented scientific leader capable of functioning as the institute’s figurehead, where necessary.
  • The director has demonstrable experience in population studies, both at national and international level, is well-acquainted with both the Dutch and the international scientific systems and understands the policy fields and consultative structures relevant to the institute. The director is successful at enhancing the institute’s position in academic circles and among policymakers in the Netherlands and abroad.
  • The director is skilful at identifying scientific and social trends that may be of relevance to the institute and at using his or her observations to develop a strategic agenda for the institute’s long-term position or specific research activities.
  • The director is a skilled communicator. He or she is either fluent in Dutch or prepared to learn the language within a short period of time.

Given the demanding nature of this position, any existing external obligations should be limited to a maximum of one day a week.

Conditions of employment

The KNAW adheres to the salaries and other terms of employment set out in the Collective Agreement for Universities in the Netherlands. The appointment will initially be for a five-year period, with a possible re-appointment for another five-year period. Other options may be considered, depending on the candidate’s background. The salary is in conformity with the severity of the position.

The NIDI is a research institute of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) engaged in the scientific study of population (demography). Its offices are located in the centre of The Hague. The institute has a staff of approximately 50 employees, most of whom  researchers. The NIDI consists of two research departments: the Social Demography Department (SoDem) and the Projections, Migration and Health Department (PMH). Much of the institute’s funding comes from project financing. In addition, the institute has various management support units that are supervised by the deputy director.
