he focus of the Institute’s research programme is on political institutions broadly defined, their design, functioning, and implications. Candidates are expected to work within this programme and to assist in the teaching of two courses a year on average.
A MA, MPhil or MSc degree in political science, or in adjacent area with a demonstrable interest in political science;
Excellent study results;
A good and demonstrable command of English.
If accepted, the candidate will be appointed as PhD candidate/promovendus. The candidate will initially be appointed for a probationary period of one year. In case of a positive evaluation after this year the contract will be prolonged, with an additional two years for candidates with a research master degree and an additional three years for candidates without research master or equivalent degree.
The gross monthly salary in the first year is set at € 2,042 or € 2,379 – depending on prior degree qualifications – and increases up to € 2,612 in the final year. An appointment with Leiden University includes a pension build-up and facilitates other benefits such as an annual holiday premium of 8% and an end-of-year premium of 8.3%. No tuition fees are required.

The Institute of Political Science
The Institute of Political Science of Leiden University invites applications for a PhD position in political science, starting in September 2012, or as soon as possible thereafter.
The Institute, which consists of about 45 national and international faculty members, has an established international reputation, having consistently received the highest ratings in peer reviews of both its teaching and research programmes. The Institute offers a Dutch-language BA programme in Political Science, and English-language Masters’ programmes in Political Science, in Political Science Research, and in International Relations and Diplomacy, at the Leiden and The Hague campuses.
