LUC The Hague:
Leiden University will start its University College in The Hague in September 2010. This decision was taken on 29 September 2009 by the Leiden University Executive Board after endorsements by the Board of Governors and the University Council. Leiden University College in The Hague will provide a fully accredited, three year Liberal Arts & Sciences undergraduate programme in English for a selected group of excellent and highly motivated students from around the world.
This interdisciplinary Liberal Arts & Sciences BA, entitled ‘Global Challenges’, focuses on Peace & Justice and Sustainability. The programme links up perfectly with the international profile of The Hague as ‘City of Peace, Justice and Security’ and with the expertise of Leiden University in International Law, World Politics, Area Studies and Governance. In addition to the core of international academics based at LUC, leading scholars from the Leiden-based faculties will also participate in the programme. LUC staff will be able to take full advantage of being part of Leiden University.
An important component of the Liberal Arts & Sciences philosophy is the residential element. The international composition of Leiden University College The Hague fully immerses its students in a multi-cultural community, complete with all the pleasures and challenges that come with it, as well as in a vibrant and cosmopolitan city environment. LUC Assistant Professors will be expected to contribute actively to this stimulating and vital atmosphere.
The University College will provide a demanding and enriching academic education and prepare students for prominent positions in international society. Academic staff should be unusually dynamic and motivated to take part in creating an environment in which excellence can flourish.
The start of Leiden University College The Hague represents the capstone of a number of initiatives by Leiden University to promote excellence in Higher Education, including an Honours College in Leiden with which LUC will work closely. For this integrated approach to academic excellence, Leiden University was recently rewarded with a subsidy of €4 million from the so-called Sirius programme in the Netherlands.
Leiden University College The Hague will admit 120 students to start in September 2010. In future this number will be raised to 200 students per academic year.
