Job description

We offer the successful candidate a challenging career track towards a position as full professor. With a focus on talent we have committed ourselves to invest in both professional and personal development of our staff. Our tenure track consists of a temporary appointment for a period of six years maximum and is expected to lead to a promotion to a tenured position as associate professor. If you can meet our standards, a promotion to a position as full professor can be expected within the subsequent 3 to 5 years. Part of the track is a detailed agreement on the targets to be met. Those targets vary from research and educational achievements to successful fund raising and development of managerial skills.

Requirements

We want to attract an energetic and talented wood anatomist with a clear view on a challenging wood anatomical research program. You have a Ph.D. degree in Plant Systematics or other relevant discipline and at least two but no more than six years of experience at the postdoctoral level in systematic wood anatomical research. You have an excellent publication record, and you operate in a broad international scientific network. You have excellent teaching and communication skills in English, both written and verbal and you are eager to participate at educational activities at the bachelor and masters level. In parallel with your research, you are expected to be successful in raising research funds.

Knowledge of ecological wood anatomy and xylem physiology are an advantage because it is anticipated that the successful candidate develops a research plan that fits within the scientific aims of the NCB Naturalis as an institute for integrative systematics, focusing on the research themes Morphology & Evodevo, Phylogenetics & Horizontal Genomics, Biogeography and Global Change Biology. Finally, participation in the curation of our immense wood collections (110.000 specimens) and contributing to the major flora-projects of the NCB Naturalis are part of your tasks.

In this specific track you will be appointed at Leiden University and be working for the Netherlands Centre of Biodiversity Naturalis. A transfer to the Netherlands Centre for Biodiversity is foreseen.
