The project is organized in two workpackages. For this vacancy, the information about Workpackage A is applicable.
Workpackage B concentrates on the small-scale experimental work that is carried out in Groningen University (RuG – supervisors: Dr. W.P. Vellinga, Prof. J. de Hosson). This workpackage concentrates on the study of interface evolution in realistic samples and model systems, whereby FIB/SEM will be used to:
1 analyze deformed polymer-metal interfaces;
2 characterize the interface microstructure;
3 assess damage at the interface.
The analysis on the model systems involves the processing of the micro-samples, applying deformation and imaging the resulting interface evolution. The role of oxide layers will be studied and macro-samples will be deformed in-situ during which the interface damage will be measured. For the B-part of this project, the PhD researcher has started working arleady. (in Groningen location).
Workpackage A (this vacancy!) concentrates on the meso-scale numerical-experimental analysis of the polymer-coated material. This workpackage will be carried out in Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e – supervisors Dr. P. Schreurs, Prof. M. Geers).
The research involves the meso-scale experimental analysis of interface evolution in realistic samples, the modeling of interface evolution in model systems (characterization of small-scale cohesive zones, simulation of local deformation and de-adhesion) and the numerical analysis of the influence of the interfacial roughness and dynamic roughening during deformation (using crystal plasticity for the underlying substrate).
For this project, the PhD candidate should possess a MSc. Degree in Mechnical Engineering with a strong background in computational mechanics and basic knowledge of materials science. Experience in micromechanics and modelling at the microstructure level, cohesive zones and associated microstructural finite element techniques would certainly be an important asset.
Further M2i requirements:
When fulfilling a PhD position at M2i, the candidate will be given the status of PhD Researcher. He/she will have employee status and will be eligible for all the employee benefits offered by M2i. The contract is for 4 years. Gross salary for the first year is EUR 2,242 gross per month. This amount increases to EUR 2,587 gross per month in the fourth year. The PhD thesis should be completed at the end of the 4th year term with the M2i. The researcher and the supervisor will draw up a plan for any additional training and supervision that is specifically needed.
Contract type: Temporary, 4 years
