Job description

Within the Learning and Cognition programme of the Centre for Learning Sciences and Technologies (CELSTEC - Open University of the Netherlands) one of the research lines concerns the involved processes in Information Problem Solving (IPS) and the way instruction can be designed to foster students’ IPS processes. This PhD-project is positioned in this line of research.

One important aspect in the IPS process is the integration of information found in multiple (hypertext) documents. In contemporary education students are often asked to integrate information from multiple documents and synthesise this information into a coherent product, such as an essay or a presentation. When working on these assignments, they frequently search the World Wide Web. The fact that the Web is made up in hypertext makes a dynamic organization of information through links and connections possible. Processing this information requires more regulation and cognitive capacity compared to processing traditional linear texts. Students can become overwhelmed by the amount of information to process. In this project the process of integration of information using Internet sources and different kinds of support to foster students’ integration processes will be studied and effects on comprehension will be measured.
