Job description

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has vacancies for two positions in the atmospheric greenhouse gases group of the Centre for Isotope Research (CIO), which is part of the Energy and Sustainability Research Institute Groningen (ESRIG). One of the positions is a modeller, the other an observationalist.

The first candidate is expected to lead this group, and to extend the present, mainly observation-oriented group by a substantial modelling effort. The second candidate is expected to lead the present atmospheric observational programme of the CIO, directed to greenhouse gases and related tracers. Their experience and innovative ideas, and their fruitful interaction should develop the group into a leading international research group in this field. They have to be able to base the work to a large extent on external funding.
Both are excellent teachers who can motivate students of different disciplines and will develop new courses on specific topics about this subject in the BSc and the MSc programmes. Teaching duties include the supervision of Bachelor, Master and PhD students.

The University of Groningen is an equal-opportunity employer, and is striving for a better gender balance. Therefore, female candidates are especially encouraged to apply.

Requirements

The candidates:
- have a doctorate in physics, chemistry, meteorology, or a closely related field
- have at least two years of (postdoctoral) international experience
- is recognized in the international community of atmospheric modelling, resp. is experienced in atmospheric greenhouse gas measurements
- show clear affinity with the subjects discussed in the profile reports (see below)
- are enthusiastic about close observation-model interaction
- have a strong list of publications
- have shown capabilities to lead a research group
- have shown the ability to acquire external funding
- have experience with PhD student (daily) supervision
- have affinity with BSc and MSc education, as well as a good track record in teaching
- are fluent in English and have a good knowledge of Dutch, or are willing to learn Dutch within a time frame of two years.

Conditions of employment

The level of appointment for the modelling position will be Full Professor, but depending on experience an appointment as Associate Professor is possible. The level of appointment for the observationalist will be tenure track Assistant Professor, but an Associate Professorship would be possible for senior candidates.
The University of Groningen offers a salary dependent on qualifications and work experience: for tenure track Assistant Professor from € 3,872 to € 4,970 for Associate Professor from € 4,651 to € 5,920 and for full professor from € 4,902 to € 7,142 gross per month for a full-time position.

Application
Interested candidates are requested to submit a letter of motivation, a curriculum vitae (including 3 reference, letters not yet necessary at this stage), a list of publications, a list of five self-selected "best papers" (not copies of the papers), a statement on teaching goals and experience, and a brief description of scientific interests and research plans (maximum: 3 pages).

Please send your reaction before March 5th, 2012 24:00 CET.
