Job description
The Faculty of Arts of the University of Groningen announces the vacancy of a permanent full-time position in Medieval History at the level of (Senior) Lecturer/Assistant Professor. We are looking for an inspiring teacher and multi-faceted researcher, whose main expertise is in the field of Cultural History. The Medieval History section shares responsibilities for the History BA and MA curricula with five other history sections in the department. It also contributes to related curricula such as the Research Master Classical, Medieval and Early Modern Studies. The Medieval History research programme is part of the Groningen Research Institute for the Study of Culture (ICOG) and participates in the Netherlands Research School for Medieval Studies.
Job description
The candidate will be expected:
- to contribute actively to the History programme at BA and MA levels (including research master Classical, Medieval and Early Modern Studies). Course co-ordination; lectures; tutorials; seminars; essay and examination marking; supervising Bachelor and Master theses
- to publish scholarly works in the appropriate fora; to help develop the research profile of the Medieval History section by the development of national and international grant proposals and the implementation of projects
- to contribute fully to the research culture and teaching activities within the department and to take on various administrative responsibilities.
Requirements
We ask:
- a PhD in Medieval History with a special interest in cultural history
- a track record of research and publications (preferably evident from post-doctoral experience); further research potential and plans
- an internationally visible profile that complements and enhances the Medieval section's profile in research and teaching. Hence your research and teaching should relate to the following aspects:
1. cultural history of the High and Late Middle Ages, with an emphasis on the intellectual, scientific and religious developments in that period
2. historiography and methodology of Medieval History
3. comparative and interdisciplinary outlook.
In addition expertise on the following fields is recommended:
1. historiography and theory of Cultural History in general
2. the medieval Mediterranean and Arab world.
- confirmed experience in academic teaching, at various levels and in various formats as well as ability to perform teaching duties outside the own specialisation, including the willingness to develop this
- oral as well as written fluency in English
- excellent social, communicative skills, collegial attitude in sharing administrative tasks.
Conditions of employment
The University of Groningen offers a salary dependent on qualifications and work experience starting from a minimum of € 3,195 gross per month (salary scale 11) to a maximum of € 4,970 gross per month (salary scale 12) for a full-time position, excluding 8% holiday pay and 8,3% end-of-year gratification and participation in a pension scheme for employees. This is a tenure position; the decision on tenure will be taken on the basis of a formal assessment after two years.
The starting date for this appointment is August 1st, 2010 (with the prospect of starting teaching from September 1st, 2010).
