Job description
The Faculty of Arts of the University of Groningen announces the vacancy of a permanent full-time position of a (Senior) Lecturer/Assistant Professor. The successful candidate will teach in the department of American Studies, at bachelor and master level, and contribute to the research profile of the department. He or she will participate in research groups within the Groningen Research Institute for the Study of Culture (ICOG). He or she will be employed in the teaching and research group Modern History. American Studies is the only programme of its kind in The Netherlands to offer a self-contained, interdisciplinary Bachelor's degree (three years) and Master's degree (one year). It currently has a total enrollment of approximately 300 students. The curriculum is delivered in English by an international team of faculty. All students spend a semester at one of the nine US universities with which the department has long-established student- and staff exchange relations. Both the BA and MA programmes achieved an 'excellent' for academic content, organization and coherence in the most recent national quality assurance review (TAE). The department seeks to retain its strong national position and to strengthen its position in Europe by attracting more highly-qualified international students to the MA. Research at ICOG is characterised by an interdisciplinary approach. The Centre represents many periods and disciplines, ranging from (art)history and theory of literature to media studies and from performing arts to international relations.

- contribute to research in the field of American Studies, including the writing of grant proposals and conference organisation. Research time is in principle 40% of the full time position

Conditions of employment
The University of Groningen offers a salary dependent on qualifications and work experience starting from a minimum of € 3,195 gross per month (salary scale 11) to a maximum of € 4,970 gross per month (salary scale 12) for a full-time position, excluding 8% holiday pay and 8,3% end-of-year gratification and participation in a pension scheme for employees. This is a tenure position; the decision on tenure will be taken on the basis of a formal assessment after two years.
The starting date for this appointment is August 1st, 2010 (with the prospect of starting teaching from September 1st, 2010).
