Job description
The Faculty of Arts of the University of Groningen is seeking to appoint a Full Professor of History and Theory of International Relations.
The main focus of the chair is on new interdisciplinary developments in IR, merging sociology, legal theory, and philosophy. IR theory, a historical perspective, and knowledge of developments in international law and international political sociology provide the preferred background for interpreting and feeding these new developments. Expertise in the field of security studies is seen as an asset.
The successful candidate will be capable of teaching on all levels of the programme of International Relations and International Organization (IRIO). The University of Groningen is primarily looking for a candidate who has relevant interdisciplinary expertise, shown by publications in leading international journals and books published by high-ranking publishers. The professor needs to be experienced in setting-up (international) research programs and acquiring research grants. A substantial international network is essential.
The position requires the professor to:
- provide teaching in History and Theory of International Relations at all levels (BA, MA and PhD)
- coordinate and conduct research in the field of the History and Theory of International Relations
- raise external funds for research
- supervise PhD students
- perform administrative and organizational duties
- cultivate and develop national and international contacts to further teaching and research.
Requirements
We are seeking candidates with a broad, interdisciplinary profile who will be able to act as a key figure for the department of IRIO and to provide and stimulate high quality teaching and research.
Candidates are expected to:
- hold a PhD in International Relations or in a closely related field
- be experienced and dedicated lecturers with extensive research experience in the field of History and Theory of International Relations
- have a broad, interdisciplinary approach to teaching and research
- possess good managerial, administrative and organizational skills
- have been successful at raising external funds for research
- have experience in supervising PhD students
- are able to promote interest in the field.
Conditions of employment
The University of Groningen offers a full-time position as Full Professor 2 preferably as from 1 January 2011. The salary will be € 4,904 (minimum)/€ 7,142 (maximum) gross per month for a full-time appointment (CAO for Dutch universities).
