The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences is offering young, talented researchers, tenure track assistant professor positions. These staff members are expected to develop their own line of research within a particular field. The appointment will be on a temporary basis for a maximum of 6 years. On completion of 5 years of employment there will be an assessment of performance based on established criteria including research and teaching qualifications. If the outcome of the assessment is positive, the assistant professor will be promoted to the rank of associate professor with tenure. At the end of a further 4 - 7 year period there will be another assessment aimed at a promotion to full professor.
The position
The vacancy is in the Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials. The candidate is expected to initiate new research on complex electronic materials based on spin and orbital moments, polar displacements and structural distortions using novel scattering and spectroscopy techniques offered by synchrotron, free-electron lasers and neutron facilities.
The candidate is also expected to build up a leading international research group in this field based to a large extent on external funding. He/she is an excellent teacher who can motivate students of different disciplines and will develop new courses on specific topics about this subject in the BSc and the MSc programmes. Teaching duties include the supervision of bachelor, master and PhD students.
Requirements
The candidate should have a doctorate in the field of chemistry, physics, or a closely related field. He/she has at least two years of international experience (postdoctoral) and a track record of outstanding research and is internationally recognized, with publications in leading journals cited by prominent researchers. He/she has excellent organizational and teaching skills; is fluent in English and has a good knowledge of Dutch, or is willing to learn this language within two years. Experience in the acquisition of research funds is necessary.
Conditions of employment
The University of Groningen offers a salary dependent on qualifications and work experience up to a maximum of € 4,970 (CAO-NU, scale 11/12) gross per month for a full-time position.
