Job description

The research topic will be in the area of geometric approximation, in particular sampling and geometric inference, with applications to the analysis of complex geometric patterns in the large scale structure of the universe. The PhD studies will be carried out under supervision of Prof. Gert Vegter (Johann Bernoulli Institute) and Prof. Rien van de Weygaert (Kapteyn Astronomical Institute).

Requirements

Applicants must hold a MSc degree (or equivalent) in mathematics or computer science, or a related field, and are expected to enroll in the PhD program of the Groningen Graduate School of Science. They should be able to communicate in English, and they should have an interest in the area of applied geometry and topology. Excellent programming capabilities are a plus.

Conditions of employment

The University of Groningen offers a salary of € 2,042 gross per month in the first year, up to € 2,612 gross per month in the last year for a full-time position. Initially, the appointment will be for a period of 18 months. After one year, the PhD's performance will be assessed. If the result of the assessment is positive, the appointment can be extended till 4 years. The position will be starting 1 November 2010 or later. The position includes some very moderate teaching duties.

Applications are invited for a PhD Position in the Geometry Group at the Johann Bernoulli Institute for Mathematics and Computer Science of the University of Groningen (NL).

The position is funded by the European Commission. It is part of the EU-project Computational Geometric Learning, carried out by a consortium consisting of leading computational and applied geometry groups at the University of Jena, the University of Athens, INRIA France, the TU Dortmund, Tel Aviv University, ETH Zurich, Groningen University and the Free University of Berlin.
