Job description

Your task will be to assist academic researchers in their use of the High Performance Computing Cloud infrastructure as is available at SARA. You will be working in the eScience and Cloud Services team, getting to know the ins and outs of the HPC Cloud infrastructure and be in direct contact with our academic users.

At SARA we facilitate science in the Netherlands and beyond. We are driven by our enthusiasm for our users and their research. We work closely together with researchers from High Energy Physics, Life Sciences, Social Sciences, Humanities, Astronomy, Engineering, and various other disciplines. Our users work with increasingly larger amounts of data which brings new challenges almost every day.

We are looking for a technical consultant with experience in eScience projects, Cloud computing, distributed computing and/or storage, who likes being close to research and likes working for and with people.

Requirements

  • B.Sc. degree in Computer Science or a related field; Master’s degree preferred
  • Excellent communication skills, ability to handle deadlines and to multi-task
  • Ability to translate functional requirements into technical implementation
  • Two years of related experience
  • Understanding and experience with virtualization
  • Experience with Cloud computing paradigms
  • Comfortable with Linux and shell scripting
  • Enthusiasm for science and scientists

    Desired qualifications:

  • Deep understanding of Cloud computing and virtualization, Hadoop, or GPU computing and related concepts, such as scalability, performance, queuing, caching, and synchronization techniques
  • Knowledge of data processing algorithms and data structures
  • A vision on Big Data in science
  • Demonstrated ability to publish and present your work on conferences, technical blog postings, or published books/papers

Conditions of employment

You will be appointed in a full-time position. The appointment will be initially for one year. Attendance of courses and national and international meetings will be drafted. Every year there will be an evaluation. The salary is in accordance with the university regulations (VSNU) scale 10/11 and will depend on the level of education and experience of the candidate. Scale range 10/11 : from € 2.379,- up to a maximum of  € 4.374,- per month gross, based on full time employment.

Contract type: Temporary, one year
