Job description
The position is a 4-year PhD student position, to be completed by writing and defending a PhD thesis about an aspect of bipolar transistor modelling, culminating, if successful, in a PhD degree.
The research work in general will consist of a balanced combination of experimental work, performing measurements in our advanced electronics laboratory, and analysis of experimental data. These activities will result in an improved understanding and models that will actually be used in the semiconductor industry.
Bipolar transistors are the active devices of choice for advanced radio frequency applications, such as upcoming telecommunication generations and radar systems. In these applications, the most advanced bipolar transistors will be applied. The study of these advanced electronic devices suggests a myriad of topics in semiconductor device physics. The focus of the research will be on understanding and modelling advanced bipolar transistors for future mm-wave applications.
In this project, we shall closely cooperate with NXP-Semiconductors: in the course of the project, the candidate will spend part of his/her time at NXP-Semiconductors so as to exchange knowledge and results.
Requirements
The candidate has an academic MSc degree in physics, electrical engineering, applied mathematics or an equivalent field. The candidate has an affinity for semiconductor device physics and for the combination of experimental work and mathematical analysis and modelling.
Strong communication skills for the interaction with the other members of the project’s team are to be expected. The candidate should have an open personality and good English language skills in order to closely cooperate with colleagues and students as well as write project documents.
Conditions of employment
TU Delft offers an attractive benefits package, including a flexible work week, free high-speed Internet access from home, and the option of assembling a customised compensation and benefits package (the 'IKA'). Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.

Organisation
Delft University of Technology
Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) is a multifaceted institution offering education and carrying out research in the technical sciences at an internationally recognised level. Education, research and design are strongly oriented towards applicability. TU Delft develops technologies for future generations, focusing on sustainability, safety and economic vitality. At TU Delft you will work in an environment where technical sciences and society converge. TU Delft comprises eight faculties, unique laboratories, research institutes and schools.
Department
Electrical Engineering, Mathematics & Computer Science
The Laboratory of Electronic Components, Technology and Materials (ECTM) is part of the Department of Microelectronics and offers a multi-disciplinary research environment that interacts strongly with the industry.
The Semiconductor Device Modelling section focuses on physics-based modelling of semiconductor devices. A central activity is the support and development of the world standard model MEXTRAM for bipolar transistors. MEXTRAM is widely used in the semiconductor industry to support electronic circuit simulations. In our group, starting from physical principles and experimental data, we develop understanding of how electronic devices work to explain and model their electrical characteristics.
