Job description

The research of the new position should particularly apply to physical processes where spatial-temporal dynamics and nonlinear process behavior play a dominant role. For these systems it is notoriously difficult to infer efficient approximate models, whereas they occur most often in applications. The understanding of these phenomena cannot be captured in spatially lumped models, but can only be inferred by investigating spatial-temporal interactions and non-linear behavior. In Electromechanics the spatial-temporal character of magnetic fields and force distributions and in process industries of mass and energy flows are evident. The development of approximate modeling tools for spatial-temporal systems is viewed as the prime research area of this new position. The mainstream of robust controller synthesis techniques relies on linear and lumped models. Very few controller synthesis procedures have been developed for spatial-temporal and nonlinear systems. A major paradigm shift is therefore necessary for the development of controller synthesis techniques that establish performance improvements, robustness and model uncertainty reduction in spatial-temporal and/or nonlinear dynamical systems. The investigation of relevant classes of nonlinear and spatial-temporal systems and the development of controller synthesis techniques is recognized as a key question in process optimization and real-time control and is viewed as a dedicated research objective in this positio

Requirements

You have to show your international reputation in research on spatial-temporal systems, model approximation and/or robust optimization, supported by publications in renowned journals and presentations at relevant conferences. Recognition by experts in the field has to be apparent. Eagerness to apply your knowledge for industrial problems has to be demonstrated. Experience with spatial-temporal systems, model approximation and/or robust optimization is appreciated. You are expected to explore new research directions, initiating and participating in (EU) scientific networks, participating in the Department's research profile Smart and Sustainable Society, the Dutch Institute on Systems and Control and the 3 TU Center of Excellence Intelligent Mechatronic Systems. Industrial contacts and contracts are essential to touch real industrial problems and to generate, in cooperation with research agencies, the financial resources for the research plans. You are expected to take care of Bachelor and Master courses at TUE and graduate courses within the DISC and the EU networks and summer schools, together with supervising master and PhD student

Conditions of employment

This concerns a permanent position as full professor (1.0 fte) in the existing chair Control Systems within a dynamic and ambitious university. Salary will be based on your knowledge and experience. We have an attractive package of fringe benefits (including excellent work facilities, child care and excellent sports facilities).  As part of the application process, the candidate will be asked to make a presentation for members of the appointment committee.
