Job description

As a PhD candidate you will participate in the Graduate School of Arts and Social Sciences.

The Graduate School of Arts and Social Sciences has an intake of about 10 PhD students each year. Students receive a coherent programme of introductory courses and intensive supervision, complemented by additional courses organized by a national graduate school. The Programme is characterized by its basic choice for interdisciplinarity and the emphasis on highly topical issues in science and society. If you are curious, talented and if you have the ambition to become an excellent researcher, we would be delighted to hear from you.

Requirements

The key to success for any PhD candidate is an academic attitude and the ambition to become an excellent researcher. In addition, you should have the relevant educational background and skills required by a researcher in the specific field you have chosen. You have completed a research master (MPhil) or an equivalent degree. In some cases, applicants may be required to acquire additional qualifications, for example by entering the second year of our research master. Students with a regular master will only be accepted in exceptional cases.

Conditions of employment

The Dutch PhD-system differs from systems in other countries. Most PhD candidates in the Netherlands are employed by the universities to do research and conclude this with a PhD thesis. The Graduate School offers two options:

1. a four-year contract with teaching;

2. a three-year contract without teaching.

Part-time variant are also possible.

A gross salary of between € 2,042.00 per month in the first year and € 2,612.00 in the fourth year will be offered (based on a full-time appointment).

FASoS offers two 3-year bachelors programmes: Arts and Culture, and European Studies, six different 1-year masters courses and two 2-year research masters programmes.
