Job description

The Department of  Health, Ethics and Society is seeking candidates for assistant professor of History of Public Health, Medicine and Health Policy.  The candidate will contribute to the interdisciplinary research programme Social and Normative Aspects of Biomedical and Public Health Technologies of the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences by developing research in the field of the history of public health in  the Netherlands and in Europe. Acquiring sources of indirect funding of research will be an important task.

The candidate will also contribute to the teaching of students. He/she will develop and courses medical history in the context of  academic training of medical students and contribute to bachelor and master programmes in Health Scienes, European Public Health, Molecular Life Sciences, Global Health  and of the national masterprogramme Medical History.

Requirements

Required expertise

Doctoral degree medicine, health sciences, history or social sciences. Expertise in history of modern medicine and health care, in particular the history of modern public health and health policy. Expertise in relevant research methodologies. University teaching experience in relevant disciplines. Experience in academic course design. (International) experience in working in the area of health. Excellent analytical skills and commitment to teaching and developing new approaches to the history of public health and health policy.

 

Conditions of employment

The candidate will be appointed for 1,0 fte for 3 years, after which the appointment will be converted into a permanent one in case of positive assessment.

The assistant professor will be member of  the department of Health, Ethics, and Society of the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences, Maastricht University. The departments’s research focuses on the societal and normative dimensions of health care and public health. The interaction between scientific knowledge and technological innovation on the one hand and societal trends on the other is studied as well as the implications of these interactions for the distribution of responsibilities and rights between professionals, citizens and patients, society and politics. The department is responsible for teaching a variety of courses in the different curricula offered by the Faculty. These courses include critical thinking, health ethics, critical social and political analysis, medical history, medical anthropology, culture and health, international (public) health and research methodology.
