Heparan sulfate (HS) is a negatively charged polysaccharide expressed in the renal filter. In renal patients with proteinuria the expression of HS in the renal filter is reduced. We found that this loss of HS is associated with an induction of the HS-degrading enzyme heparanase. We propose several mechanisms for heparanase-mediated HS loss as a key determinant in the pathogenesis of proteinuria. Highlights of the current project (funded by the Dutch Kidney Foundation) are:
•Identification of cellular & molecular processes in the development of proteinuria
•Translation of research findings to novel molecular targets for therapeutic intervention
•Application of a wide range of approaches & techniques to answer the research questions
•Working visits to international collaborating groups
•Publication of research in scientific Journals and presentation at meetings
M.Sc. in (Medical) Biology, Molecular Life Sciences, Biomedical Sciences or similar
•Independent and team player attitude
•Well-organized
•Social and communicative skills
•Preferable, experience with molecular techniques and animal work (art. 9)
