A PhD fellowship in molecular neurobiology is available at the Donders Centre for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour, Centre for Neurosciences. Www.ru.nl/donders/. The general focus of the lab is to gain insight into the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying mental retardation, focusing on the synaptic and developmental deficits of the disease. We are currently focusing on the role of Rho GTPase signalling and epigenetic regulation herein. We use multi-disciplinary approaches combining molecular biology, brain slice electrophysiology, two-photon imaging, together with viral gene transfer methods to manipulate the molecular composition of single neurons in a cell specific, spatial and temporal controlled manner.
Candidates should have a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in a field related to molecular neurobiology.

Cognitive Neurosciences, section neurobiology
The Donders Institute for Brain Cognition and Behaviour is an all-encompassing brain research institute in Nijmegen, The Netherlands. It is a lively, friendly, collaborative environment, and has a staff of excellent researchers from all over the world. The institute studies brain functioning in healthy individuals as well as brain dysfunctioning related to various psychiatric disorders. There is an increasing interest to work on the genetic background of brain functioning/ dysfunctioning as many cognitive abilities, psychiatric disorders, and brain structure and organization are influenced by genetic factors. The section of neurobiology is embedded within the department of Cognitive Neurosciences (head prof. dr. S. Gielen). This research is further embedded in the research profile Neurogenetics and Molecular Neurobiology (head dr. H. van Bokhoven).
