You will be examining the applicability and properties of standard machine-learning methods in various medical applications that vary in signal-to-noise ratio, in the correlation between features, and in the predicted type of outcome. The aim is to obtain an optimum match between the methods and the type of medical problem. You will make an inventory of the literature in this area, carry out extensive simulation studies and analyze the data from three available data sets. You will report the results in scientific publications and ultimately in a doctoral thesis.
This PhD internship will give you an excellent opportunity to carry out doctoral research into applied statistical problems in the field of predicting and classifying high-dimensional data, such as micro-arrays for gene expression.
You have successfully completed your training in (bio)statistics or bioinformatics-computing. Furthermore, you have an affinity for the statistics of prediction and classification of high-dimensional data, and have a keen interest in research, preferably into medical applications. A mastery of both English and Dutch is a must.
We offer a temporary full-time appointment for between 3 and 4 years on the salary scale for Ph.D. internships.
Contract type: Temporary, 3-4 years
