Job description

From 1 January 2010, the FMG will offer a postdoc position in the social sciences. The position is financed by the 'Institutions and Inequality: Stratification, Politics, and Living Arrangements' (INSTINE) research focal point programme. The project leader is Prof. H.G. van de Werfhorst. The position is offered for two or three years, depending on the progression of work and the continuation of funding.

Housing is an important dimension of social stratification and has a great impact on the living conditions of individuals and households. Inequality in housing therefore deserves a more prominent place on the agenda of inequality research than it has had to date. This project focuses on the development of housing inequality over the life course, on the impact of life events on housing trajectories and on the influence of spatial contexts. To this end, secondary analysis of large-scale data sources will be performed using quantitative, longitudinal research methods.

The position will be part of the soon to be founded Amsterdam Center for Inequality Studies, which will collaborate closely with the Center for Global Health and Inequality (CGHI) and the Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Labour Studies (AIAS) of the UvA, and with the research group 'Life Courses and Inequality' of the VU University Amsterdam. The postdoc will work closely with Dr Caroline Dewilde (sociology) and Prof. Clara Mulder (geography/demography). The postdoc researcher will also be embedded in the ASSR's Institutions and Distributions sociology programme group. Research on inequality has received fresh impetus through a number of new initiatives funded by the FMG, NWO and the EU. The postdoc researcher and his or her successors will get the opportunity to help strengthen these developments.

Tasks

• To carry out the ‘Housing, Life Course and Inequality' research project (70% of the time in the case of a full-time appointment, 60% of the time in the case of a part-time appointment).
• To prepare a VENI research proposal within the allocated research time.
• To take responsibility for some of the teaching within the department of Sociology (30% of the time in the case of a full-time appointment, 20% of the time in the case of a part-time appointment).
• To publish, with other members of the research team, results in international peer-reviewed journals.
• To help organize national and international workshops.

Requirements

• PhD in one of the social sciences (or expectation of completing a PhD in the near future).
• Extensive experience of quantitative methods and techniques in the social sciences, and of the analysis of large-scale data sources (knowledge of STATA or SAS is an asset).
• Familiarity with research in at least one of the housing, life course and social inequality domains.
• Experience of giving English-language presentations and of publishing in the English language.
• Willingness to teach (and preferably experience of teaching at university level).

Conditions of employment

The postdoc researcher will be employed through UvA Jobservice for a period of 2-3 years, either part time (30.4 hours/week) or full time (38 hours/week). The gross monthly salary in the first year will be €3,195 (pay scale 11-0, Researcher 3) based on a full-time contract; in the second and third years, the gross monthly salary will be €3,315.

The Faculty of Social and Behavioral Sciences (FMG) is the largest educational and research institution in the social sciences in the Netherlands. The Faculty serves 7,500 students in numerous Bachelor's and Master's programmes in political science, sociology, anthropology, communication science, psychology, social geography, planning and international development studies, and educational sciences. The academic staff are employed in both education and research. There are over 1,100 employees at the Faculty department, which is accommodated in a number of buildings in the centre of Amsterdam.

The Amsterdam School for Social Science Research (ASSR) studies the functioning of contemporary societies and their interrelationships from historical, comparative and empirical perspectives. The ASSR has a clear scientific mission and high-level research programmes, and offers training to PhD researchers. The ASSR is also a research institute within the UvA-FMG, and is the administrative unit for the researchers of three departments, namely Political Science, Sociology/Anthropology, and Geography/Planning/Development Studies.
