The candidate will participate in the ongoing research line of Dr Lucassen on stem cells and structural plasticity in the adult brain in relation to stress and cognition and diseases like depression and dementia. In addition, the candidate will participate in the bachelor eductional program of the faculty and assist in courses, practical training and the supervision of master students. He/she is further expected to acquire external funding.
Appointment will initially be on a temporary basis for a period of three years. If the candidate has proved to be qualified for the position, a permanent contract will be offered.
The salary is in accordance with the University regulations for academic personnel, and will at most be €4,374 gross per month (salary scale 11), depending on expertise and previous experience. The Collective Employment Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.
Together with other newly appointed teachers, the assistant professor will follow an introductory programme and undergo, possibly supplementary, training that will lead to a basic teaching certificate. In this, account will be taken of any previously acquired experience and competences.

Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences
The Faculty of Science at the UvA is one of Europe's foremost institutions of higher education and research in its chosen fields of specialization. It plays an active role in international science networks and collaborates with universities and industry. The Faculty has approximately 2,500 students and 1,500 staff members spread over 4 departments and 10 research institutes. Each institute has its own research programme, a substantial part of which is externally funded by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO), the Dutch government, the EU and various private enterprises.
In March 2009, a large part of the Faculty moved to new premises in the Science Park Amsterdam; the entire Faculty will be located there by the end of 2010. The move will make the Park one of the largest centres of academic research in the Netherlands.
The Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences (SILS) is the faculty's largest institute. Approximately 250 scientists and staff members perform excellent research centered on four themes: 1) The Living Cell, 2) Plants and Health, 3) Inside and Beyond the Brain and 4) Life Science Technologies.
