Job description

The Department of Political Science at the University of Amsterdam invites applications for an assistant professorship in Political Theory, with a special expertise in contemporary political theories on concepts such as liberal justice and social inequality (in national and global perspective), freedom and democratic governance, and ethnic, cultural and religious pluralism. We would particularly welcome candidates who combine this expertise with knowledge of political science research and theory, including social choice and rational choice theories and neo-institutional theories. An ability to teach on the history of political thought (from Aristotle to Marx) would be an asset. 

Tasks

  • Develop, conduct and supervise high quality academic research on contemporary Political Theory
  • Teach general and specialist courses on Political Theory at both undergraduate and graduate levels, and involvement in supervising graduate students
  • Participate in acquiring external funding for research
  • Actively contribute to the research programme of the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research and the development of the field through scholarly publications and participation in national and international research networks and educational initiatives

Department

Department of Political Science

The Faculty of Social and Behavioral Sciences (FMG) is the largest educational and research institution in the social sciences in the Netherlands. The Faculty serves 7,500 students in numerous Bachelor's and Master's programmes in Political Science, Sociology, Anthropology, Communication Science, Psychology, Social Geography, Planning and International Development Studies, and Educational Sciences. The academic staff is employed in education as well as research. There are over 1,100 employees at the Faculty, which resides in a number of buildings in the centre of Amsterdam.

The Department of Political Science is one of the departments of the FMG. Education and research activities are carried out by special institutes. The College of Social Sciences (GSS) and the Graduate School of Social Sciences (GSSS) are responsible for the undergraduate and graduate teaching programmes in Political Science. Most of the research within the Department is conducted in the research programmes of two research schools, the Institute for Migration and Ethnic Studies (IMES) and the Amsterdam School for Social Science Research (ASSR).
