The Department of Political Science at the University of Amsterdam invites applications for an assistant professorship in international relations, with a teaching and research focus on the increased importance of developing countries in Africa and/or East/SE Asia in global economic and/or security relations. Specifically, we are looking for applicants with a strong empirical focus on the latest global developments, such as (but not limited to) 1) the role of China as an emerging economic and military power, 2) European co-operation with the ASEAN-plus-3 group and the emergence of Asian financial and monetary co-operation experiments, or 3) conflicts and competition in the global system over the natural wealth of Africa. With this appointment the Department aims to strengthen its expertise in order to maintain the truly 'global' coverage of the research and teaching profile of the department.
The gross monthly salary will be between €3,195 and €4,970 per month, based on a full-time appointment and depending on the appointee's qualifications and experience. The appointment will be temporary for three years, with the prospect of a permanent appointment if the conditions for tenure are realized.

Department of Political Science
The Faculty of Social and Behavioral Sciences (FMG) is the largest educational and research institution in the social sciences in the Netherlands. The Faculty serves 7,500 students in numerous Bachelor's and Master's programmes in Political Science, Sociology, Anthropology, Communication Science, Psychology, Social Geography, Planning and International Development Studies, and Educational Sciences. The academic staff is employed in education as well as research. There are over 1,100 employees at the Faculty, which resides in a number of buildings in the centre of Amsterdam.
The Department of Political Science is one of the departments of the FMG. Education and research activities are carried out by special institutes. The College of Social Sciences (GSS) and the Graduate School of Social Sciences (GSSS) are responsible for the undergraduate and graduate teaching programmes in Political Science. Most of the research within the Department is conducted in the research programmes of two research schools, the Institute for Migration and Ethnic Studies (IMES) and the Amsterdam School for Social Science Research (ASSR).
