Job description

The System and Network Engineering (SNE) group conducts research in the area of cross-domain network and Grid/Cloud resource provisioning, optical and hybrid networking, network and application security, and resource descriptions using semantic web and programmable networks for the Future Internet.

The SNE group is involved in a number of national and EU funded projects contributing to the development of novel concepts in the area of policy based access control for on-demand provisioned Grid/Cloud computing resources and the underlying optical network infrastructure.

The PhD student will work on the Access Control Infrastructure for on-demand multi-domain network and computing resources provisioning in the framework of the European project GEYSERS (Generalised Architecture for Dynamic Infrastructure Services).

GEYSERS (http://www.geysers.eu/) is a three year project that focuses on new models for the Future Internet. It will deliver a generalized architecture for dynamic infrastructure services; it will specify and implement a novel optical network architecture able to support 'Optical Network + Any-IT' resource provisioning seamlessly and efficiently. The major security challenges in the project include developing the Security and AAA services infrastructure for on-demand network and Cloud/IT resources provisioning that should cover the whole life-cycle of the provisioned resources and services. The proposed architecture will define a number of new security mechanisms and functional components that allow for managing security context and creating dynamic security associations for the provisioned resources/services.

In the large EU-funded project GEANT3 the SNE group contributes to the development of the access control and security infrastructure for the on-demand provisioned SOA (Service Oriented Architecture) based composable services. This project develops original GEANT Multi-domain bus (GEMbus) concepts that extend the concepts of the by industry highly appreciated Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) to a heterogeneous multi-domain Cloud/Grid based environment.

Tasks

As PhD student in the SNE group your tasks will include the following activities:

  • Perform scientific research in the described domain
  • Present results on international conferences
  • Publish results in scientific journals
  • Participate in activities of the group and the department
  • Assist staff in teaching graduate SNE courses in the domain of the group

Conditions of employment

Contract type: Temporary,

Department

Faculty of Science

The Faculty of Science at the University of Amsterdam is one of Europe's foremost institutions of higher education and research in its chosen fields of specialization. It plays an active role in international science networks and collaborates with universities and industry. The Faculty has approximately 2,500 students and 1,500 staff members spread over 4 departments and 10 research institutes. Each institute has its own research program, a substantial part of which is externally funded by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO), the Dutch government, the EU and various private enterprises.

In March 2009, a large part of the Faculty moved to new premises in the Science Park Amsterdam; the entire Faculty will be located there by the end of 2010. The move will make the Park one of the largest centres of academic research in the Netherlands.
