The Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA) is an alliance of the faculties of Dentistry at the Universiteit van Amsterdam and the Vrije Universiteit. As well as training students in dentistry, it provides postgraduate courses for qualified dentists. The Centre also has branches in Almere and Hoorn, providing clinical education. Internationally, ACTA is recognised as a leading research institute. It also operates its own clinics, at which about 500 patients a day receive high-quality dental care. ACTA teaches over 800 students and employs more than 500 staff. The Centre aims to make the most of the talents of both students and staff by providing a top-quality learning and working environment. The Department of Oral Biochemistry of the Academic Centre of Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA) is looking for a PhD student.
The goal of this research project will be the identification, development and improvement of antimicrobial peptides and peptide conjugates to fight bacteria, including those involved in bioterrorist attacks. The proposed project is closely related to the research line of the Department of Oral Biochemistry of ACTA, which is directed to understand the mechanisms by which defensive systems in saliva maintain oral health on a molecular level. This project is funded by TNO and the Dutch Ministry of Defense.
Within this project you will work in an academic research group in collaboration with a post-doctoral peptide/protein chemist and a technician. The PhD student will design and carry out the experiments, resulting in the writing of a PhD thesis. The results will be reported in meetings with TNO and the Ministry of Defense that are held four times a year.
Applicants should have an MSc with good grades in Microbiology, Biochemistry or Biology. Proficiency in the English language is a requirement.
The appointment will be full-time (38 hours a week) for a period of four years (a probationary period of 12 months plus a further 36 months after a positive evaluation). The gross monthly salary will be €2,042 in the first year and increases to €2,612 in the fourth year. The collective employment agreement of Dutch universities is applicable.
