Job description
The new assistant professor will be expected to spend 60 percent of his or her time on teaching and 40 percent on research.
Tasks
- strengthening the broad profile of the sociology and anthropology of development at the University of Amsterdam
- teaching general, specialist and methodological courses in the Bachelor's and Master's programmes of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, supervising undergraduate students and assisting in the supervision of graduate students
- developing, carrying out and supervising social science research. This research will take place within the AISSR research program "Moving Matters: People, Goods, Power and Ideas" (see the website of the AISSR for further information)
- securing (or helping to secure) external funding for research
- actively contributing to the development of the discipline in national and international contexts by publishing and participating in national and international research networks and educational initiatives
Requirements
- completed doctoral thesis in the social sciences, preferably in the field of sociology, development sociology, or anthropology
- publications in international peer-reviewed periodicals and/or in books published by internationally recognised presses
- broad knowledge of general social science
- specialist knowledge in the field of Asian studies, preferably the sociology and anthropology of East Asia
- experience in conducting empirical research in Asia
- mastery of qualitative research methods
- ability to teach and motivate students at basic and advanced levels
- possession of a Basic Teaching Qualification (or equivalent) or willingness to acquire this certificate within two years
- fluency in Dutch and English, and preferably an Asian language (candidates with no Dutch proficiency must be able to teach in Dutch within two years)
Conditions of employment
Depending on qualifications and experience, the gross monthly salary will range from €3,195 (scale 11) to €4,970 (scale 12), based on a full-time appointment (38 hours a week).

Department
The Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences (FMG) is the largest educational and research institution in the social sciences in the Netherlands. The Faculty serves 7,500 students in numerous Bachelor's and Master's programmes in Political Science, Sociology, Anthropology, Communication Science, Psychology, Social Geography, Planning and International Development Studies, and Educational Sciences. The academic staff is employed in teaching as well as research. There are over 1,100 employees in the Faculty, which resides in a number of buildings in the centre of Amsterdam.
The Department of Sociology and Anthropology is one of the six Departments in the FMG. Research and teaching are carried out by dedicated institutes. The College of Social Sciences (CSS) and the Graduate School for the Social Sciences (GSSS) are responsible for the undergraduate and graduate teaching programmes in the social sciences. A new research institute for all the social sciences is being established in 2010, the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research (AISSR), as the administrative unit for researchers of three departments: Political Science, Sociology and Anthropology, and Human Geography, Planning and Development Studies.
