Job description

The Department of Sociology and Anthropology currently has openings for one non-tenured (5 years) and two tenured Assistant Professors of Sociology. The new professors are expected to spend 60 percent of their time on teaching and 40 percent on research.

Tasks

  • strengthening the broad profile of sociology in Amsterdam
  • provide general, specialist and methodological education in the Bachelor's and Master's programmes of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology and (assist in) supervising graduate students
  • developing, carrying out and supervising social science research at a high academic level. One of the professors has to be specialized in the sociology of (medical) care and welfare and will become a member of the new AISSR research program "Dynamics of Citizenship and Culture"; one has to be specialized in social inequality in a broad sense, and will be a member of the AISSR research group "Institutions, Inequalities and Internationalisation", the third one has to be specialized in cultural sociology and will become a member of one of these research programs (see the website of the AISSR for information on these research programs)
  • acquiring, or helping to acquire, external funding for research
  • actively contributing to the development of the discipline in national and international contexts by publishing and participating in national and international research networks and educational initiatives

Requirements

  • completed doctoral thesis in the field of the social sciences
  • publications in international ‘peer reviewed' periodicals and/or in books published by internationally recognised presses
  • broad knowledge in the field of general social science
  • specialist knowledge which fits either of both research programs
  • thorough mastery of quantitative or qualitative research methods
  • capable to teach and motivate students at both basic and advanced levels
  • in possession of a Basic Teaching Qualification (or equivalent) or willingness to acquire this certificate within two years
  • in a fairly short term: perfect passive, and adequate active knowledge of Dutch; being able to teach in Dutch immediately will be considered an advantage

Conditions of employment

Depending on qualifications and experience, the gross monthly salary will range from €3,195 (scale 11) to €4,970 (scale 12), based on a full-time appointment (38 hours a week).

The Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences (FMG) is the largest educational and research institution in the social sciences in the Netherlands. The Faculty serves 7,500 students in numerous Bachelor's and Master's programmes in Political Science, Sociology, Anthropology, Communication Science, Psychology, Social Geography, Planning and International Development Studies, and Educational Sciences. The academic staff is employed in education as well as research. There are over 1,100 employees at the Faculty, which resides in a number of buildings in the centre of Amsterdam.

The Department of Sociology and Anthropology is one of the six Departments in the FMG. Research and education are carried out by special institutes. The College of Social Sciences (CSS) and the Graduate School for the Social Sciences (GSSS) are responsible for the undergraduate and graduate teaching programmes in the social sciences. A new research institute for all the social sciences is being established in 2010, the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research (AISSR), as the administrative unit for researchers of three departments: Political Science, Sociology and Anthropology, and Human Geography, Planning and Development Studies.
