Job description

You will join the Physiology expertise team within the Nutrition & Health department. The Physiology expertise team contributes to delivery of new, substantiated health benefits in defined areas of interest based on mechanistic insights into functional targets. You will specifically be responsible for delivering high-quality scientific support in the area of cardio-metabolic health and bringing a broad understanding of human post-prandial lipid metabolism into multidisciplinary discussions.

In addition, you have a shared responsibility to establish and manage new research lines that ensure the continuity of our scientific capability, which will generate new ideas and longer-term opportunities for our business. You will manage Unilever contributions to internal and external research projects and collaborations, and represent Unilever to key external researchers.

You will discuss and agree tasks based on deliverables and priorities with the Expertise Team Leader (line manager). You will frequently interact, discuss, and align research activities with the Science Leaders and fellow Research Scientists in Unilever R&D and have regular contacts with Unilever Business Managers.

Specific job tasks are to:

  • Generate and develop new ideas and (pre-clinical) research strategies, initiate and manage research activities (including lab bench work where necessary) on post-prandial lipid metabolism;
  • Provide up-to-date expertise within the field of human post-prandial lipid metabolism (e.g. uptake, transport, transformations, storage);
  • Support the development of an integrated view of the lipid metabolism field, from post-prandial events through to adipose tissue biology;
  • Monitor scientific developments in the field of post-prandial lipid metabolism as it relates to cardio-metabolic health, in order to assess relevance and impact for the Unilever business both in developed and developing countries
  • Integrate current understanding of lipid metabolism into adjacent benefit areas such as weight management;
  • Develop project proposals based on the needs of the business and the objectives of the department and manage the delivery of agreed project milestones. This will require independent planning, execution of specific tasks (including laboratory bench-work where relevant), delivery against deadlines, creative problem-solving and cross-discipline communication skills and may include managing a team that assists you.;
  • Analyse, interpret and present qualitative and quantitative data;
  • Represent the expertise group at scientific congresses and conferences;
  • Carry out literature-, and/or other reviews, integrating information into frameworks and summarising these into memo’s, reports and/or presentations for different audiences (e.g. scientists, product developers, marketeers) in English.

Requirements

  • Doctoral degree (PhD) in post-prandial lipid metabolism, ideally with experience in human nutrition;
  • 5 Years relevant working experience (after Phd);
  • Track record that demonstrates relevant experience in the post-prandial lipid metabolism field and related academic publications;
  • Active external network that allows new developments in the area to be integrated rapidly and provide contact with potential consultants;
  • Experience in independently structuring and conducting academic literature reviews within his/her specialist area; ability to integrate the information, assess its relevance and communicate in various formats to different audiences
  • Excellent communication skills: writing and presentation (in English).
