Job description

In the context of bigger and faster innovation and roll-out, a reliable and “first time right/close” scale-up of processes involving dispersed systems (emulsions, foams) is very important. Computer tools like Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Matlab-based population balance models play an increasingly important role. We are therefore looking for a research scientist with a firm background in the implementation and use of such tools. Since the computational approaches have to be based on and validated by experimental work, experience with the latter is required as well.

  • As part of multi-disciplinary project teams, you will perform research in the area of processing of structured materials, in particular emulsions, foams and dispersions;
  • You will be responsible for OTIF delivery of agreed project targets, which will likely include supervision of a project sub-team of several FTEs (e.g. work stream leader or activity leader);
  • You will build and implement the use of computer tools in this area. This will include in particular the use of the commercial CFD package FLUENT, validating its built-in multiphase capabilities and extending those via user-defined routines;
  • You will monitor external developments in the processing of microstructures area in general and the area of multiphase CFD in particular, and assess their relevance for our business;
  • You will keep a specific focus on the identification and development of proprietary technology for Unilever, both in the context of the project work and the processing of microstructures area in general;
  • You will represent the group at scientific congresses and conferences.

Unilever Research Vlaardingen is one of Unilever’s main central research institutes, with a strong focus on food research. The research institute supports brand innovation programs, based on scientific and technological capabilities.

Within the expertise area of Structured Materials and Process Science, the Processing of Microstructures team aims to stretch the use of current processing tools and to scout/develop novel processing concepts. This will be achieved by exploiting fundamental understanding of the interaction between the process and the product microstructure, in close collaboration with ingredient experts, product developers and process engineers.

Requirements

  • PhD in physics or chemical engineering;
  • Tangible experience in emulsification;
  • Good foundation in CFD and other computational approaches (e.g. Matlab, population balances);
  • Preferably experience with project/team management;
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English.

Conditions of employment

  • A competitive salary & bonus;
  • 30 holidays;
  • Attractive employment conditions, such as a collective healthcare insurance, good pension.

Above all we offer you a dynamic environment in which people with energy, creativity and passion work together. There are good opportunities to pursue your professional and personal goals and develop yourself on national and international level.
