Job description
In a challenging career trajectory you are, as Assistant Professor in the field of Synthetic Bioorganic Chemistry, responsible for the organization, implementation and coordination of new research activities in this field as well as building up a leading international position. In this position you will also be motivating and teaching students and develop new courses. Training and coaching to accomplish all this will be provided.
Research on biologically active nanostructures is dependent on the availability of tailor-made bio-organic functionalities that can be attached to the nanostructures at will. To this aim novel, complex bio-organic moieties need to be synthesized, frequently by unexplored routes and/or methods. Such syntheses, e.g. of complex carbohydrates, need to be efficient to obtain the desired material in sufficient amounts for subsequent embedding in or on nanostructures and biological testing.
In order to further strengthen our current expertise in both the research and teaching in this field, we are looking for highly qualified and motivated applicants for an assistant professorship in the area of the organic synthesis and chemical biology of novel bio-organic molecules and moieties.
Requirements
As Assistant Professor you are an ambitious and enthusiastic scientist and a team player, devoted to research and education in Synthetic Bioorganic Chemistry.
You also have:
•a successfully completed academic study;
•a PhD degree in organic chemistry or related subject and postdoctoral experience;
•an excellent list of publications;
•knowledge and expertise in synthetic bio-organic chemistry;
•experience with management of complex projects;
•experience in writing scientific publications and research proposals and presenting results of research on international conferences;
•proven experience in acquisition of (academic) research funding;
•excellent communication skills;
good didactic qualities and enthusiasm for teaching and working with students;
Conditions of employment
We offer you as talented scientist a challenging tenure track career trajectory. From the position of Assistant Professor you can gradually grow into a Professor position holding a Personal Chair. Of course, training and coaching are provided, and interdisciplinary (international) cooperation is stimulated.
As we will only be selecting outstanding candidates to take part in the tenure track, this will be a good stepping stone to a further career within Wageningen UR or elsewhere.
We offer you a temporary contract with the possibility of extension, for 38 hours per week. Gross Salary at the start of employment: from € 3195,00 to € 4374,00, based on full time employment and dependent on expertise and experience.

Organisation
Wageningen UR - AFSG, Laboratory of Organic Chemistry
At Wageningen UR you will be working for a major education and research organization with 5,500 employees. Working at Wageningen UR is characterized by cooperation with colleagues from other parts of the organization or from other disciplines. Employees of Wageningen UR are ambitious when it comes to working on the quality of life.
AFSG is the Science Group for development and transfer of knowledge in the field of sustainable applications of agro-components for safe and healthy food and non-food products
Department
Laboratory of Organic Chemistry
The Organic Chemistry group constitutes a large, interdisciplinary research team involved in teaching and research on organic chemistry, with an emphasis on surface-based reactivity. Examples that gained international recognition include biofunctionalized organic monolayers and microchannels, immobilized enzymes, and bio-organic nanoparticles. The group aims to excel in the research and teaching of organic chemistry. The laboratory is extremely well-equipped with a unique set of analytical instruments for bio-organic materials and surfaces, and has an experienced technical staff. In addition to this, the embedding within Wageningen University and Research Center adds ample biological input into our focus on chemistry-based bionanotechnology. Currently ca. 1000 students/year take part in one or more Organic Chemistry courses provided by our faculty.
