Job description

We are inviting you to apply for a PhD position for the project “Economic foundations of European land use models” at LEI (Agricultural Economics Research Institute) in cooperation with Wageningen University. You will contribute to the further development of land use modelling by examining the driving forces in agricultural land use change (i.e. excluding change where agricultural land is claimed by other sectors).
Simulation models of land use change are frequently used in policy analysis, as they can provide a link between social drivers of change and the impact of these processes at local level. The present models are technically sophisticated but lack sufficient understanding of the underlying economic processes. The aim of this project is to deepen this understanding specifically for agricultural land use. As a starting point you have to link the Land Use Scanner model with CAPRI, a partial-equilibrium model for the agricultural sector. You will apply new spatial econometric techniques in order to achieve a better economic grounding for land use modelling. The methodology you develop in the first stage of project you will apply in the second stage on the European scale.

Requirements

You hold an M.Sc. degree in quantitative economics or econometrics with some experience in economic modelling. Furthermore, you have strong conceptual and analytic skills. You know how to reduce complex problems to the core elements and are able to translate research results to a broader audience of laymen.
