Job description
LEI has created 4 PhD-positions in collaboration with Wageningen University. These positions are aimed at making new developments in science applicable to enable socially and strategically sound policy choices in politics and business. In this context we are looking for a PhD Experimental research on co-operative entrepreneurship. You conduct experimental-economic research on co-operative entrepreneurship in a project financed by the Agricultural Economics Research Institute (Wageningen UR – LEI). During the first phase of the research you will follow courses on experimental and institutional economics. Next you will execute an extensive literature research to learn about experimental studies on coalition and group formation, competition and cooperation and conduct a survey to learn about the core issues of cooperation in real-life settings. Consequently you will design and test economic (laboratory) experiments to investigate under what (basic) conditions entrepreneurs are likely to participate in or defect cooperative firms. After this, you will execute the laboratory experiments and collect data on the behaviour of both students and entrepreneurs. Depending on the results of the experiments you will increase the complexity of the experiments to enhance the analogy with the natural settings with agricultural entrepreneurs and cooperative firms. Currently, many cooperative firms and (other) producer organisations discuss about how to modify the institution to maintain or increase market power against globally sourcing retailers. In short, you will work on a topic which is both a scientific challenge and a highly relevant topic in the agrofood cluster.
