Job description
In the recent years, the Bioprocess Engineering group has experienced an increase in the number of projects with a strong biological component. This type of work requires an operational panel of biochemical assays and other analytical tools. For setting up and maintaining these analyses and training and supporting our PhD students in their work we are looking for a motivated and flexible technician. The analyses mainly involve the determination of biomass composition (i.e. total protein, total lipid, total sugar, amino acid composition, etc), using standard chromatography or electrophoresis techniques. In addition to this, the group has the ambition increase efforts in animal cell cultivation and downstream processing of therapeutic proteins and refinery of biomass for food, feed or fuel applications, for which analytical tools need to be developed.
As technician you will work closely together with PhD students in order to develop new assays, train existing assays and give support with carrying out these assays. You are responsible for maintaining the equipment, development and training of new assays and the collection of biological data in a consistent manner in order to ensure comparability of data between projects.
Requirements
You have a finished HLO education or equivalent with at least three years of relevant experience in at least several of the techniques mentioned above in a research environment. You are motivated and flexible with good written and oral communication skills in English and Dutch.
Conditions of employment

Wageningen UR (University & Research centre)
Wageningen University and Research CentreDelivering a substantial contribution to the quality of life. That's our focus – each and every day. Within our domain, healthy food and living environment, we search for answers to issues affecting society – such as sustainable food production, climate change and alternative energy. Of course, we don’t do this alone. Every day, 6,500 people work on ‘the quality of life’, turning ideas into reality, on a global scale. Could you be one of these people? We give you the space you need. For further information about working at Wageningen UR, take a look at www.jobsat.wur.nl. The Bioprocess Engineering chair is one of the 5 closely collaborating groups in the cluster Biobased Science and technology at the Department Agrotechnology and Food Sciences of Wageningen University. The mission of the Bioprocess Engineering is to educate and do research on the development of new biotechnological processes for manufacturing of bulk chemicals and biofuels, biopharmaceuticals, bio-pesticides, and healthy food ingredients. The challenge is to develop processes that deliver high-quality products in a sustainable and economic way, that avoid overexploitation of natural resources and the environment and maximize the chances of utilization by existing and new biotech companies.
We use an integrated approach: both the bioreactor and the metabolism of the cell are designed and controlled based on mathematical models, always combined with experimental studies. In collaboration with research partners, better production organisms are selected or organisms are improved.
