Job description
Within the programme “Sustainable production of insect proteins for human consumption” financed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food quality, the following PhD position is vacant. The student will work closely together with two other PhD students, one at the Laboratory of Entomology (WU) dealing with “Nutritional and environmental aspects of insects as a human food source”, and the other working in the framework of the same programme on “Characterization and functional properties of protein fractions from insects and ways to tailor them” at the WU Chair Group “Product Design and Quality Management”. Another collaborating partner in the programme is Wageningen UR Food & Biobased Research.
Requirements
Completed MSc in Biology, Plant or Animal Sciences or comparable degree and disciplin with demonstrable interest in multidisciplinary research. Experienced in nutritional and ecophysiological research. Excellent communication skills. Good knowledge of statistical analysis. For candidates from a non-English speaking country a TOEFL or equivalent test result should demonstrate a high quality command over the English language.
The PhD student will conduct the following tasks:
Identify suitable insect species to be reared on organic waste with the aim to obtain nutrient-rich insect bodymass. Establish the efficiency of conversion of ingested feed to insect bodymass.Study the effect of different feed sources on the quality of insects as a human food source (proteins, fatty acids, vitamins and minerals). Evaluate food safety of insects reared on organic waste. Study the economic efficiency of using whole insects as a food source (freshly) frozen, freeze dried, processed by e.g. grinding) as well as that of isolated and purified proteins.
Conditions of employment
Full time appointment for a period of 12 months (go-no go moment) with possibilities of extension up till a total duration of 4 years. Gross salary € 2042, - per month in the first year, rising to € 2612, - per month in the 4th year.
