Job description

A person who manage sea-going research projects on seabirds and marine mammals. Design and manage monitoring campaigns, coordinate surveys and analyze and present the data and publish the results scientifically. Present results in a comprehensive way to various stakeholders. The person we are looking for is experienced at sea, does not get seasick or airsick easily, knows any North Sea bird and mammal at a first glimpse, is flexible and a good team-worker. Besides, he or she can work in a laboratory and behind a desk and is a good communicator.

Requirements

We are looking for a marine biologist with a keen interest in seabirds and marine mammals and their role in the North Sea ecosystem. The person we are looking for also has an interest in the role that these animals play in marine conservation, particularly within the Natura 2000 framework. Candidates should have the ability to apply standard marine survey techniques and develop new approaches if necessary. The successful applicant will be expected to work in a dedicated team, is flexible, particularly in sea-going work. We are looking for an open-minded person, with good communication skills, who is eager to learn and strengthen our position in the scientific world. Conditions of employment

The function level will be Junior Researcher (scale 10; minimum salary €2.388,-- per month, maximum € 3.893,-- per month before taxes for a 36 hrs working week).

IMARES: IMARES (http://www.imares.wur.nl/NL/) is the Dutch institute for strategic and applied marine research. We focus on fisheries management, environmental protection and spatial use of the seas and coastal zones. Our core competencies are (marine) ecology, nature protection, water quality, contaminant risks, biological production and marine governance. Our research methods comprise (sea going) fieldwork, experiments, lab work, data management, modeling and simulations. IMARES employs 190 people representing a broad variety of scientific disciplines. The institute is part of Wageningen University and Research Centre and has strong links with the academic world. The department Ecosystems focuses on the functioning of marine ecosystems and is located in the northwestern part of the Netherlands. An important part of our work comprises sea-going work on the so-called charismatic megafauna, the birds, seals and dolphins of the North Sea. Our seabirds and marine mammals teams need a biologist who has expertise in the various techniques of counting seabirds and marine mammals at sea, both from ships and from aircraft. The work is often linked to developing legislation on marine Natura 2000 sites.
