Job description

The Information Technology Group at Wageningen University offers a position for a 4-year PhD project on ‘modelling synthetic culture in virtual characters’. The research is part of eCUTE, a project funded by the EU under the FP7 challenge in Technologically-Enhanced Learning. It will develop innovative technologically-enhanced learning approaches in cultural awareness and understanding, based on virtual world simulations. In these, learners will interact with intelligent interactive graphical characters embodying models of culture-specific behaviour and interaction. The project will target two contrasting learner types: late primary-age children (9-11) and young adults (18-25), and is due to start in Sept 2010. It has 7 partners besides WU - Heriot-Watt, Sunderland University, INESC-ID Lisbon, Augsburg University, Jacobs University, Seikei University and Kyoto University.
Part of the eCute team, the PhD candidate will create believable cultural learning scenarios based on theoretical approaches that connect with the experiences of the target learner groups and establish an operational parameterisation of theoretically derived cultural behaviour and use it to create synthetic cultures and characters that behave as if they live within such cultures.

The research is carried out in Wageningen, and should lead to a PhD dissertation.

Requirements

Strong conceptual thinking, strong programming skills in a mainstream OO language, experience of at least one relevant AI technology (e.g intelligent agent architectures and technologies; NLP and dialogue; affective modelling and interaction; interactive devices and technologies). Affinity with the modelling of culture and emotions is required. Ability to work in a team and willingness to travel as needed for the work programme are also required as are strong written and verbal communication skills in English.

Experience of research publication and skills in graphical modelling and animation are desirable.

Conditions of employment

A PhD position for a period of 18 months, extended with another 30 months upon favourable evaluation. Gross salary will increase from € 2042 in the first year up to € 2612 in the last year based on a full-time appointment (38 hours per week). You will be working in a pleasant environment in a small, dynamic and innovative group. Through the eCute program, there will be opportunities for international exchange with other PhD students and scientists. The project is at the cutting edge of the modelling of culture and the development of virtual characters.
