Job description

In the collaborative project “Brainlabs” between WageningenUniversity, University Medical Center Groningen and 4 companies (Brainlabs, Zebra Bioscience, Lionix and Bohlmeijer Holding) the Laboratory of Organic Chemistry is looking for a PhD student who will perform research on the local covalent immobilization of different antibodies in a new type of multiplex sensor. The microfluidic array-like sensor should be capable of rapid detection of biomarkers whose occurrence in plasma or urine is linked to various forms of depression in humans. The work includes the specific local chemical modification of chips with suitable spacers to which antibodies against the biomarkers will be bound. After developing a suitable sample clean-up, multiple samples will be analyzed simultaneously for multiple biomarkers. Validation of the sensor with regard to selectivity, sensitivity and robustness will be part of the work. The PhD student will closely cooperate with other scientists involved in this project.

Organisation

Wageningen UR (University & Research centre)

Wageningen University and Research centre (Wageningen UR) is a leading international organization. Within the field of healthy nutrition and living environment we are working on the quality of life. We are always looking for talented colleagues. Professionals with passion who want to work with us for the world of tomorrow.

Agrotechnology and Food Sciences is the organization for development and transfer of knowledge in the field of sustainable applications of agro-components for safe and healthy food and non-food products.

The Organic Chemistry group (www.orc.wur.nl) constitutes a large, interdisciplinary research team involved in teaching and research on organic chemistry, with an emphasis on surface-based reactivity. Examples that gained international recognition include biofunctionalized organic monolayers and microchannels, immobilized enzymes, and bio-organic nanoparticles. The group aims to excel in the research and teaching of organic chemistry. The laboratory is well-equipped with a unique set of analysis instruments for bio-organic materials and surfaces, and has an experienced technical staff. In addition to this, the embedding within Wageningen University and Research Centre adds ample biological input into our focus on chemistry-based bionano-technology. Currently ca. 1000 students/year take part in one or more Organic Chemistry study elements provided by our faculty.
