Job description

Using modern tools as conceptual process design and thermodynamics of soft matter, the PhD student is going to work on the complete redesign of processing of mushroom. Nowadays the processing of mushroom is quite traditional, and involves evacuation and sterilization with intensive usage of water and energy, and mushroom quality is also quite degraded. The aim is to rethink the processing all over, and to come to a process, which is both sustainable, improves mushroom quality, and retains the natural moisture content of the mushroom. It is an asset if nutritional quality of the mushroom is also enhanced. As mushroom is also high in protein, much of the thermodynamics is analogous to that of cooked meat – which is recently described using a thermodynamic theory from soft matter physics.

The PhD student will work in the group of Food Process Engineering

Requirements

We are looking for a candidate with a Master Degree in Food Science, with knowledge of thermodynamics and physical transport phenomena, or Chemical Engineering or Physics, with a keen interest for Soft Matter or food materials. The candidate should also have good communications skills, and the candidate will intensively collaborate with industry, who is a major player in mushroom processing in Europe.

Conditions of employment

We offer you a temporary position for a period of 1.5 years with extension of 2.5 years after successful evaluation. Gross salary per month € 2042 in the first year rising up to € 2612 per month in the fourth year.

We not only offer a competitive salary but also good (study) leave and a pension of the ABP Pension Fund.
