Job description
We are looking for an ambitious PhD-student Earth System Sciences to work in a collaborative project within the Knowledge for Climate funded programme "Improving climate projections". The aim of this programme is to provide high-quality information on regional climate in The Netherlands, now and in the future, for developing national and regional adaptation strategies. The PhD project is part of a sub-programme dealing with mechanisms of local impacts on weather, climate and climate change. Specifically, the question will be addressed as to how the land surface and small-scale atmospheric dynamical processes interact to shape our future climate.The PhD project has the aim to foster new insights into the influence of a (changing) land surface on the regional climate in the Netherlands. The PhD student will assess the sensitivity of weather to the local land surface in various conditions, using conceptual and 1D numerical models. He/she will implement improved land surface models (LSM) and appropriate state-of-the-art land cover (scenario) maps in 3D, high-resolution non-hydrostatic regional models in support of future dynamical downscaling activities. He/she will then assess the added skill of the improved 3D model in reproducing small-scale spatial patterns in averaged near surface meteorology and the magnitude of extreme (rainfall) events, through a systematic validation of the coupled system against high resolution datasets. With this validated system finally she/he will assess the potential effects of future land cover changes on future regional weather and climate for a number of selected showcases.
The PhD student is expected to design and perform the scientific research in the field of land-atmosphere interactions as described above. The results will need to be published in peer-reviewed scientific journals as well as in a PhD thesis. As a member of the Wageningen Institute for Environment and Climate Research (WIMEK) and the Netherlands Research School for the Socio-Economic and Natural Sciences of the Environment (SENSE), the PhD student can participate in various courses organized by these Graduate Schools. The student is also expected to assist in undergraduate education.

The group Earth System Science and Climate Change (ESS CC) has its mission to advance our understanding of the Earth and Climate System as a complex system, with specific inclusion of the anthropogenic and human components. Properties and processes of the components of the Earth System, such as carbon or water cycles in the terrestrial and atmospheric compartments, are investigated as integral parts of the system, focusing on their interactions and feedbacks. Emphasis of the group Meteorology and Air Quality department has always been given to weather and land surface climate processes and how these impact on life and the environment. Now the scope of the department also includes air quality studies and the modeling and forecasting of the atmosphere from small to large scales for weather, climate and air quality while maintaining experimental and observational work as well.
