A postdoctoral position or a PhD position within the Social Brain Lab to investigate the effects of ultra soundneuro-modulation through calcium imaging techniques

The candidate will participate in NWO-funded research projects aiming at investigating the neural mechanisms of a new neuro-modulation method: focused ultrasounds. Recently, focused transcranial ultrasound stimulation has been shown to be a high-definition non-invasive neuro-modulation tool, but very little is known about its mechanisms of action,neuronal specificity and dependency on stimulation parameters. Here we will use two-photon calcium imaging combined with cell-type specific staining to visualize cellular responses in vivo in the rat brain, and characterize optimal ultrasound stimulation protocols, and how different cell-types differ in their response profile. A positive, flexible, energetic attitude will be appreciated, together with the ability to collaborate with researchers from different disciplines while at the same time being an independent researcher.

Assistant Professor in Complex Systems at the Department of Applied Mathematics

We are looking for a highly talented research scientist with a passion for teaching whose focus is on the development, analysis and application of complex systems and networks, such as approximation or control for models described by large scale ordinary and/or partial differential equations. The successful candidate is expected to have strong affinity with mathematical analysis. In addition, he or she has the capability to develop collaboration between mathematics and the multi-disciplinary research context at the University of Twente is essential. These collaborations can be established through one of the research institutes, i.e., CTIT institute on ICT, MESA+ institute for Nanotechnology, or MIRA institute for biomedical technology and technical medicine. The candidate will actively participate in the research and teaching within the Department of Applied Mathematics and develop a profile by collaborating with colleagues at CTIT, MESA+ or MIRA. It is important that a characteristic own research line within complex systems is built for which external funding, such as within the NWO Innovational Research Incentives Scheme (VENI/VIDI/VICI) and within the European Research Council can be acquired.

Researcher in sociology or anthropology of children in Ghana

The Department of Sociology, one of the Departments in the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences (FMG), has an opening for a researcher. He or she will be embedded in the programme group ‘Political Sociology’. We offer a researcher position to conduct research on the everyday problematization of bodily activity of children in Ghana. This research is part of a larger project on globalization, medicalization and ADHD in different institutional contexts lead by dr. Christian Bröer. We look for a candidate who is able to conduct focused ethnographic research. The duration of this project is 1 year. Tasks: Preparing (with dr. Bröer), conducting and documenting fieldwork (observations and interviews) in Ghana; supervising or collaborating with Ghanaian researchers or master students from the UvA; analyzing and article-writing in collaboration dr. Bröer and others.

Postdoctoral researcher in sociology or anthropology of sexuality

The Department of Sociology, one of the Departments in the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences (FMG), has an opening for a postdoctoral researcher. He or she will be embedded in the programme group 'Political Sociology' and participate in the Amsterdam Research Centre for Gender and Sexuality (ARC-GS). We offer a postdoctoral position for an early career scholar who wants to further develop her or his research in close collaboration with colleagues at the University of Amsterdam. We look for a postdoc whose work focusses on sexual practices and experiences from an interpretive perspective. A core tasks of the postdoc will be to apply for funding . The postdoc can also contribute to teaching in the area of Gender and Sexuality. Tasks: Develop, execute and publish research on sexual practices and experiences in collaboration with scholars from the department or from ARC-GS; develop and submit a research grant proposal (for example for the Dutch NWO/VENI competition); contribute to teaching and thesis supervision in the area of gender and sexuality or sociology (10% of the time); participation in conferences, workshops, seminars and other scholarly activities within and outside the department.
