Job description

Junior Scientist (tenure track) or Senior Scientist in Marine Chemical Oceanography

The Department of Ocean Systems (OCS; headed by prof. dr. Gert-Jan Reichart) is looking for a highly motivated junior scientist (tenure track) or a senior scientist in Marine Chemical Oceanography with a proven track record in ocean carbon cycling.

The Research
Researchers working within OCS aim to investigate open-ocean processes ranging from basin-wide physical oceanography to microscale sedimentary processes and from deep-sea ecology to paleoceanography and -climatology. Chemical oceanography is one of the focal points within OCS.

In support of our research we operate high-tech sampling, sample handling and analytical techniques, aimed at understanding the interaction between biology, physical oceanography and the (biogeo)chemical processes involved. OCS is hosting a dedicated CO2-laboratory, with state-of-the art, high-precission sea water carbonate analytical equipment.

As our new team member, you will help us investigate the cycling of carbon in the oceans on different spatial and temporal scales. For example, calcium carbonate precipitation and understanding its kinetics and the incorporation of (trace) elements and isotope fractionation are research topics that could be pursued within this position.

We actively collaborate with peers in (inter)national partner institutes, including the Institute for Marine and Atmospheric research Utrecht (IMAU) and the Faculty of Earth Sciences of Utrecht University, as well as e.g., MARUM - Center for Marine Environmental Sciences in Bremen and the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) in Bremerhaven, Germany.

Requirements

Is your research all about studying ocean carbon cycles? In that case we gladly invite you to join our research at OCS. We are looking for a hihgly motivated marine chemical oceanographer with an extensive track record based on ocean carbon cycling. Research topics could include, but are not limited to, ocean acidification, organismal carbon uptake mechanisms and interaction with global biogeochemical cycling.

You are expected to acquire research grants and to participate in (or lead) oceanographic research cruises with the Royal NIOZ research vessel R/V Pelagia. You will cooperate with other members of the OCS department and contribute your knowledge in multidisciplinary projects together with other researchers at the Royal NIOZ.

You like to work in an inter-disciplinary and international research environment. You have a strong command of the English language in speaking and writing.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 5 years.

Employment of this position at Royal NIOZ is by NWO (The Netherlands Organization of Scientific Research). In case the position is offered at the tenure-track level, the candidate will be hired for 5 years. At the end of a successful tenure track term, a permanent scientific staff position will be offered up to the level of senior scientist. Criteria for evaluation comprise a track record of publications that is far above average, proven skills in acquiring funding, and an international network. The position comes with the opportunity to set-up a PhD project in the same direction as the (tenure track) position.

We offer an excellent salary, a pension scheme, a holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary, a year-end bonus and flexible work arrangements. You may expect very attractive secondary employment conditions. We offer generous relocation expenses for employees coming from abroad and support with finding accommodation.

Our labour policies are based on the Collective Labour Agreement of Research Centers (WVOI).
